Since the onset of the pandemic there has been close cooperation between scientists from Canada, Mexico, and the United States in identifying and studying the virus and the spread of disease. A workshop in Tempe, Arizona, June 25 - 28 gathered mathematical modellers, epidemiologists, public health experts and other scientists, mainly from Canada, Mexico, and the United States to discuss management possibilities. Among other topics, this workshop described the age structure of cases observed and the control measures used in Mexico, mathematical modelling as a tool to assist policy decisions, ideas for making early assessments of disease parameters, the role of transportation networks in disease spread, and the difficult decisions faced by local public health officials. A second workshop bringing together many of the participants in the Tempe workshop as well as other scientists with expertise in various aspects of the understanding of influenza and disease spread is planned for Vancouver, BC, September 14 - 16. The hope is that there will be enough new information amassed since June to allow some modelling predictions and simulations for a possible second epidemic wave and measures to mitigate its effects. In addition to a few keynote talks and some panel discussions, the following sessions will be consecutively held so that all can attend and participate in discussions: Surveillance and rapid parameter estimation; Vaccine, antivirals and drug resistance; Behavioural responses and social distancing; Potential and severity of future waves; Age structure of cases and age-dependent management; Spatial spread and modeling complexity.
